The deepening of the Dambovicioara river in the Jurassic limestones of Pietra Craiului has generated a key sector over 8 km long, with the appearance of a true canyon, cut in the rock pile of limestone bridges at the end of the massif. The keys are of epigenetic origin, because the river initially penetrated into less hard sedimentary formations (sandstone, conglomerates), and when it reached the level of limestone it continued its erosion, generating the respective narrow sectors of the valleys.
The actual keys of the Dambovicioara, excavated on a length of about 2 km in the limestone bridge between the Dambovicioara depressions and the Dambovita Bridge, are noted by a monumental aspect, due to the vertical walls or even bent over the riverbed, with heights exceeding 200 places. m. On the surface of the walls one can observe the stratification of the gray-white-glossy Jurassic limestones, arranged in thick benches, on the lower part, and the white (lower cretical) limestones, in the plates, on the upper side.
